Conscience Insulaire

Recent advancements in neurosurgery, biomedical research, and technological innovations have led some philosophers to consider that previously unsuspected entities might be capable of consciousness. These include isolated hemispheres following a procedure performed in epilepsy departments (known as hemispherotomy), brain organoids, and advanced artificial intelligence systems. Gauvry's research focuses primarily on the first of these atypical candidates for consciousness, the isolated hemisphere after hemispherotomy, which has been suggested to exhibit a form of insular awareness (Bayne, Seth, Massimini, 2020) or a low level of consciousness (Blaumwolle et al., 2020).
